Sobering reminder

You know how people (meaning me) make fun of girls who go to the bathroom together in groups? I mean, how often are you at a bar or a restaurant and your girlfriend looks to you to be her bathroom partner? Happens allllll the time.

Personally, I've always been one who goes alone. I don't need anyone to hold my dress up while I pee - I can handle it, I'm a big girl. Or so I thought.....

Well, the next time I'm pulling the tough act, I may want to think again because of a friend's frightening yet very real story.

She and her friends were at Mercury at W.6th this past weekend and at the end of the night her friend went to the bathroom by herself. Nothing alarming yet, right? Just out with her friends having a fun night of drinking.

If you've never been to Mercury (save yourself a trip), the bathrooms are in the basement toward the front of the bar and the men's is before the women's. She entered the bathroom like many of us have before and at this point the bathroom attendant was either not there or was gone for the night. (They used to always have one.)

Of all the nights for the bathroom attendant to not be there!!!

As she was shutting the door, someone was pushing on the stall door to open it. No, it wasn't her friend or anyone she knew joking around. It was a complete male stranger who followed her and tried to assault her in the bathroom. After slamming her against the wall, she managed to fight him off and hide in the bathroom for a few minutes until she was sure he was gone and ran upstairs to her friends.

This is a sobering reminder that these situations happen all the time to women. Not only do we have to watch what freaks put in our drinks, we know have to watch ourselves in the bathrooms. I've heard about this happening in coed bathrooms in clubs, too, but I don't know that it's ever hit this close to home. I personally don't know the victim but I do know her friend, and she's still very shaken for herself and her friend.

It's all too often we hear these frightening stories and luckily nothing like this has ever happened to any of my girlfriends. Never on Spring Break in Florida or Acapulco or in my recent Vegas trip. We are the lucky ones.

So ladies, when you head out this weekend, go to the bathroom with your friends. With all of your friends for that matter. Take every one of them with you. After all, they are the best kind of protection to have sometimes.

Scary shit! Glad your friend was able to fight him off. When i was still playing rugby i had a similar situation when at like 11am on a saturday morning i walked to the bathrooms at Roosevelt island tennis complex - was just about to do what you do, and i heard movement in the next stall & saw a head start coming over the top of my stall. Not only did i realize it was a scary looking dude - i screamed and ran out with my shorts still half way up.
He had been in the stall next to mine sitting on the toilet with his shoes up doing god knows what - i ran out to my gf's & waited for the dude to come out as i found a police officer. Not nearly as scary as your friends experience...but 11am saturday morning - hot damn i never go to the bathroom alone since then.

STFU! Wow, I've always raved about being "that girl" who didn't need someone to "wipe my ass" when I went to the bathroom. I'll think twice next time, determined on my surroundings.

Thanks for this post, I'll link back to it later today, if you don't mind. That dude needs a heel put in his eye.

That is horrible. And at the same time so ridiculous. It's such a shame that we always have to be on our guard because some men can't seem to control themselves. Makes me so mad and ill.

I'm so glad your friend and her friend are fine. Stay safe lady.

Wow that is definitely scary! Now I'm not going to the bathroom by myself anymore, lol.

Back in college I was part of a club of women & we got sweatshirts that read, "We Pee By Ourselves" I can't believe I wore that!

This happened to me many many many years ago at a mall bathroom - you know the ones where you walk way down a really long hallway. I managed to kick the guy and he took off, I got mall security but they weren't able to do anything. I must tell me girls at least once every time they are home to never go to the bathroom alone.

Sucks - but it is reality.

So terrible -- I shared this story with my Cleveland girls. This also reconfirms why I hate Mercury. Twice I've seen coke snorted off that bathroom counter and every time I've gone I'm overwhelmed by wannabe Euro trash ravers who really hail from Euclid.

That is so frightening. I read a story on a blog recently about a woman who was assaulted in a grocery store parking lot as she was buckling her child into his car seat. As women, we always need to be on the alert. Even in places we think are safe. So sad.

Unfortunately, it is very likely that something like this has happened to one of your girlfriends, she just isn't ready to talk about it or even name it. I rarely use my real name when I talk about my rape, and only my closest of closest friends know about it.

I am so happy your friend is safe now.
